As I leave school, Mr. Harbor hands me a note for my parents. The envelope is sealed, so I have no idea what it says.

“On the third day of school? Are you in trouble?” asks Turtle when I show it to her.

“I don’t know,” I say. “Maybe.” Did Mr. Harbor see me stick my tongue out at David?

“Maybe it’s a note that says you are too sad to come to school,” says Turtle.

At first, I want to run away from Turtle for bringing up the crying again, but then I do wish it was a note that said Twig is too sad. If my teacher thought I was too upset to come to school, my parents might actually say I can keep Bo.

I hand the envelope to Dad as soon as I come in the door, but he’s distracted. He’s all happy because Mr. Bryant, who owns Sudsy’s next door, has agreed to let my parents use his empty storage room as their studio. Dad will work on his comics there, and Mom will work on her photography. They’ll both be able to have big computer screens and keep their papers all over the place.

“The note, Dad!” I say, wanting to get this moment over with. “Please open it!”

He puts down the laundry basket (clean pants, yay!) and opens the note. He reads it to himself and then hands it to Mom.
